HOWE SOUND – UNESCO BIOSPHERE REGION

UNESCO Biosphere Regions are areas of global ecological significance that make an on-going commitment to the United Nations to strive for sustainability. 

The Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound watershed includes a majestic fjord perched spectacularly on the edge of Vancouver, British Columbia. Its landscape is dramatically scenic and encompasses remarkably diverse habitats capable of supporting a vast variety of marine and terrestrial wildlife. 

An integral part of the homeland of the Squamish people, known as Skwxwú7mesh Uxwumixw, the region has served to provide the essentials of life for the Squamish and other Coast and Interior Salish people for the past 10,000 years or more. The marine and terrestrial resources of the Sound and its surrounding forest-clad mountains continue to be a valuable source of social and ecological goods and services for all who live in its sphere.

Lions Bay Beach – The Lions Bay Beach Park is the most central of the Village’s beaches adjacent to Lions Bay Marina. This picturesque park sports two play structures, manicured grass, a sandy beach, and a cordoned-off swim area complete with a float for the kids to play on. Its gently sloping terrain offers a spectacular view of the Howe Sound. 

Kelvin Grove Beach Park – The Kelvin Grove Beach Park is the southernmost beach.

The beach park is an off-leash dog area with a trail that leads to its natural beaches, a community garden and a picnic area. Park amenities include washrooms, pet waste bags, garbage and recyclable containers.

Kelvin Grove Beach offers glorious sunsets and superb diving for all skill levels. Underwater features include rocky reef structures and a stepped wall with a sandy ledge at 26-28 meters and a further drop-off ideal for deep dive drops down far beyond recreational dive limits. Sea life includes urchins, shells, sea stars, sea cucumbers and a variety of small fishes like grunt sculpins, rockfish and painted greenlings. In deeper water you can see cloud sponges and, if you’re lucky, some deep water Sixgill sharks.

Brunswick Beach – Brunswick Beach is the northernmost beach.

This secluded natural beach provides stunning views of Howe Sound. There are no amenities located at this park or in the neighbourhood.

Eagleridge Bluffs via Black Mountain Trail is a 8.9 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from May until December. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Tunnel Bluffs from Lions Bay is a 10.9 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round.

Tunnel Bluffs is a 7.2 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, and nature trips and is best used from May until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Brunswick Mountain Trail is a 14.3 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from July until October.

The Lions (Binkert) Trail is a 14.6 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a waterfall and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and snowshoeing and is best used from July until October.

Mount Harvey is a 11.1 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and snowshoeing and is best used from July until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Erin Moore Trail is a 8.5 kilometer moderately trafficked loop trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips and is accessible year-round.

Deeks Lake Trail is a 11.9 kilometer lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from June until September. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Centennial Trail is a 3.9 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, and nature trips and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Hat Mountain is a 14.6 kilometer lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a great forest setting and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.

Brunswick Mountain via Deeks Lake is a 23.2 kilometer lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a waterfall and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from July until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail.

The Lions via Unnecessary Trail is a 12.6 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and bird watching.

Trudi’s Trail is a 4.5 kilometer lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and trail running and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Deeks Bluff via Howe Sound Crest Trail is a 8.0 kilometer lightly trafficked loop trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, nature trips, and bird watching.

Kalahnee Creek Trail is a 9.0 kilometer lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, nature trips, and bird watching.

Marjorie’s Meadow is a 0.3 kilometer lightly trafficked loop trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a river and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.

Rundle Creek is a 1.1 kilometer out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a great forest setting and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking.

Hat Mountain via Brunswick Mountain Trail is a 18.3 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Lions Bay, British Columbia, Canada that features a great forest setting and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
